Laura Geitz Honoured with Life Size Statue

Australian Diamonds and Queensland Firebird legend Laura Geitz has been honoured with a life-size bronze statue.

The stature honours the former Firebird, who captained the team to three ANZ Championships. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players to ever brace the court, the statue is a tribute to a woman who placed netball on the map.

Laura Geitz helped lead Australia to two world championships (2011 and 2015), while also being apart of a silver medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, and a gold at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She also is a 3x ANZ Champion and won the Golden Bib award 3 times, being distinguished as the leagues best defender.

Geitz last played in the Firebirds double-overtime grand final victory. Shortly after that, she announced her pregnancy. Now, Geitz is raising her 10 week old son Barney, but hasn’t ruled out a comeback.

She told the Advertiser “I am in the process of thinking about it (a comeback). It is all very well to come back and play but I have been out of the game for a year.”

With this statue, Geitz becomes the first female athlete in Queensland to receive a bronze statue.
