In 2016 after waiting 108 years, the Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series, and unsurprisingly the Cubs are the favorites to repeat as champions in 2017. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has the Cubs’ odds at 4-1 as of the writing of this article. They are the favorites for good reasons. For one, Joe Maddon is arguably the best manager in baseball, Kris Bryant is the runaway with the National League Most Valuable Player in 2016. They have one of the best 1-2-3 punches in baseball, Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, and Jake Arrieta, and the rest of the starting nine are no slouches either, with Kyle Schwaber coming back from injury, All-Star Anthony Rizzo manning first base, and other All-Stars in between. Although it is believed that the Cubs are the team to beat in 2017, it’s also believe they are beatable and four teams can potentially take them down.
Honorable Mentions-New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Fransico Giants, New York Yankees.
4. Houston Astros
We know. The Houston Astros? Didn’t they go 84-78 and finished 3rd in the America League West? How can they beat a stacked team like the Cubs? Well, its simple. Youth. The Astros have tons of good young players that if they all mature and live up to their potential, they can beat the Cubs. The Astros have George Springer, Carlos Correa, and Jose Altuve from the farm system and they have imported Brian McCann, Josh Reddick and have brought back Carlos Beltran. Not to mention young pitchers like Lance McCullers and Collin McHugh. Plus do not forget about 2015 Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel, and while he has a subpar season in 2016 and recovering from an injury, if he can bounce back to 2015 form, the Astros will surprise people. The current odds for the Astros from Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook are 12-1.
3. Washington Nationals
In 2016 the Washington Nationals were 95-67 and won the National League East title for the third time in five years. The Nationals did pretty well in the playoffs last year, and if it wasn’t for an incredible effort by Kenley Jansen and Clayton Kershaw in the 2016 NLDS, the Nationals might have had a chance to make it to the World Series by facing the Cubs in the NLCS. Well, the Nationals bolstered their roster in the offseason and had set themselves up for potential greatness. They signed All-Star catcher Matt Wieters and traded for Center Fielder Adam Eaton. They already had superstar right fielder Bryce Harper, Cy Young Contender Max Scherzer, young star Trea Turner at shortstop, and another All-Star Pitcher in Stephen Strasburg. But the additions of Wieters and Eaton have only increased their chances of winning the World Series. Let’s hope second-year manager Dusty Baker is up for the challenge. The current odds for the Nationals from Westgate SuperBook are 13-1.
2. Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians were the runners up to the Cubs in the 2016 World Series and were even up 3-1 against the future champions. According to the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, their odds of winning the 2017 World Series are 10-1. They have added Edwin Encarnacion to a core of 2014 American League Cy Young Winner Corey Kluber, All Star Closer Andrew Miller, two-time All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis, heavy hitting first baseman Carlos Santana and the sensational shortstop Francisco Lindor. If he can replicate his 2016 statistics of 42 Home runs, and 127 RBI I think the Indians could have a chance to overtake the Cubs.
- Boston Red Sox
In 2016 the Boston Red Sox won the America League East with a record of 93-69. The have indeed upgraded this past off-season. Yes longtime Designated Hitter David
Big Papi” Ortiz retired. But they acquired Lefty Ace Chris Sale to partner with the 2016 American League Cy Young winner Rick Porcello and David Price. That is a 123 punch that can rival the Cubs. The Red Sox also have the number one prospect in baseball Andrew Benintendi, who will partner with Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr in the outfield. Add in Dustin Pedroia, Craig Kimbrel and others to the mix, and you have a recipe for a winner. Now there is a rumour that David Price might need Tommy John surgery but as of March 10th there has been no indication confirming the notion. The current odds for the Red Sox to win the World Series are 6-1.
