The AFL Finals Are Here

With the conculsion of round 23, the AFL Finals are set.

Here’s the final ladder:

  1. Sydney Swans
  2. Geelong Cats
  3. Hawthorn Hawks
  4. Greater Western Sydney Giants
  5. Adelaide Crows
  6. West Coast Eagles
  7. Western Bulldogs
  8. North Melbourne Kangaroos
  9. St Kilda Saints
  10. Port Adelaide Power
  11. Melbourne Demons
  12. Collingwood Magpies
  13. Richmond Tigers
  14. Carlton Blues
  15. Gold Coast Suns
  16. Fremantle Dockers
  17. Brisbane Lions
  18. Essendon Bombers

The first round of finals will see the first Sydney Derby Final, with the Giants making the finals for the first time in the club’s history, finishing fourth. Their cross-town rivals the Swans won their 9th minor premiership.

Meanwhile, the Geelong V Hawthorn rivalry continues with the Cats facing the Hawks. The two clubs have had a history of historic clashes in the recent finals, including the 2008 grand final. With Hawthorn’s recent dip in performance, this could truly decide the fate of the AFL Finals.

Onto the preliminary games. The first sees the Bulldogs travel interstate to take on the West Coast Eagles. The Eagles have a chance to move on, especially since the Eagles boast the best home record in the AFL (10 games), while the Bulldogs have won 10 interstate games. Bulldogs can be good, however inconsistency leaves a question mark hanging over their heads.

The final game sees the Adelaide Crows take on the Kangaroos. The Crows were close to finishing in the top 4, and had it not been for a loss to West Coast and a 1 point victory from Hawthorn, the Crows would have seen themselves facing most likely facing Sydney. Despite that, Adelaide have shown great form and very well could produce a Cinderella style finals run. This all starts against North Melbourne, who despite starting off 9-0 and flag favourites, have since plummeted to the 8th spot, narrowly making the finals. The Kangaroos have proven they can play good football, but it’s now or never.
